The original idea for this image came from the Sailor Moon references in Adventure Time and the art and character design of Natasha Allegri, who considers Sailor Moon to be a huge influence. From there, we saw the artwork of KnockMeOut, which you can see here: http://knockmeout.deviantart.com/art/Scouts-322189649 That inspired the color choices and general look of the outfit.
I love the idea of strong female characters, and I feel like both Adventure Time and Sailor Moon has that.
What we wanted to do with the outfits were to incorporate elements of a specific Sailor Scout. For example, since Bubblegum is a scientist, we wanted her poses and weapon to be like Sailor Mercury— So she had a Bubble Gun. For Marceline, it was a bit more difficult. We chose Sailor Saturn, gave her Saturn’s boot style, and turned her axe bass into an axe staff). The logo on her choker is the basic outline of her bass, which worked because it resembled both an upward crescent moon shape— Symbolizing good— and a downward moon shape— Symbolizing evil. Marceline is a little of both.
